What is a driver risk assessment?

driver risk assessment

A driver risk assessment is also known as driver profiling. Our online driver profiling system is a skills and knowledge assessment that utilises the tried and trusted methods of in-vehicle driver risk assessment but places the process online.

Using a combination of high-definition video footage and still images, drivers complete a 4-stage risk assessment, covering the core driving disciplines of:

  • Attitude
  • Knowledge
  • Concentration and Observation
  • Hazard Perception

These are the four key areas a professional fleet driver trainer would observe when assessing a driver in-vehicle.

Each section of the driver risk assessment contains 12 questions. After each question, the driver is told whether they answered correctly, provided with the correct answer and given a detailed explanation. This means that drivers are not only being assessed during profiling but are also being trained during the process.

At the end of the driver risk assessment, drivers are immediately given an overall risk rating of High, Medium or Low risk. They also receive a High, Medium, or Low-risk rating for each of the four sections, allowing them and their fleet manager to identify their strengths and weaknesses.

The assessment can be carried out on PCs, laptops, tablets and mobile phones, enabling you to risk assess all of your drivers, irrespective of whether they have access to a computer.

Key benefits of driver risk assessment:

✓ Accurate risk ratings: Pinpoint which drivers are most likely to be involved in an incident or collision so that preventative online driver training can be provided

✓ Immediate feedback: Drivers are told after each question whether they answered correctly and given the correct answer

✓ Immediate training: Drivers are given a full explanation or re-shown a video after each question, providing training in any gaps in knowledge or ability

✓ Instant results: Drivers are immediately given an overall risk rating of High, Medium or Low risk at the end of their assessment

✓ Identification of strengths and weaknesses: In addition to an overall risk rating, drivers also receive a High, Medium, or Low risk assessment for each of the four sections. This means they and their fleet manager can identify their strengths and weaknesses

✓ Automated module allocation: Our online driver training system can be pre-set to allocate mandatory online driver training modules and trigger modules tailored to each driver’s risk rating. This ensures they receive the correct driver training

✓ Available on all devices: Using a combination of still images and video footage, the assessment can be completed on a laptop, PC, tablet or smartphones

Should employers carry out driver risk assessments, including during recruitment?
